Introduction to I.V. Procedures for Healthcare Providers

A competency-based workshop that covers both theory and skills for IV therapy, including indications for therapy, fluids and medications, equipment, safety & infection control, troubleshooting, recognizing & managing complications, and insertion and discontinuation techniques. Skills practice progresses from artificial arms to live sticks. 


Course Learning Objectives: 

  1. Explain how NM law affects scope of practice & IV therapy

  1. Recognize the seriousness of medication errors 

  1. List the “rights” of safe medication administration 

  1. Identify the vascular system & relevant anatomy

  1. Explain the importance of aseptic technique & infection control

  1. Compare CVAD and IV devices, and describe IV system components & equipment.  

  1. List indications for IV therapy & solutions or medications that are given IV

  1. Select appropriate sites for an IV.  

  1. Recognize local and systemic complications

  1. Explain common troubleshooting techniques

  1. Demonstrate correct procedures for inserting & discontinuing IV’s

    A general certificate of completion will be issued upon being present the entire day, passing the post test with 80% success and submit an evaluation form. Persons who need continuing education credits for a healthcare license renewal are advised to seek the advice of their licensing board for acceptance of the certificate.

Please read:  Prerequisites: Must be a student of or licensed or certified practicing allied health professional whose legal scope of practice allows placing intravenous (IV) catheters and administering medications. This includes RN, LPN,, EMT-I, EMT-P, PA, Certified Medical Assistant, and Certified Surgical Scrub Technician. Persons without scope of practice to start IVs will not be permitted to attend the class. There will be a 45 minute lunch break. Feel free to bring your lunch or visit one of the fast food establishments nearby.
